Bali Road Trip – Day 5: Lovina Dolphins & Finding Balance
Throwback road trip – Day 5 🌊🐬 We woke up early in Lovina hoping to see the dolphins (lumba-lumba)… and honestly, knowing what we know now, we probably wouldn’t do it again. It felt more like dolphin chasing than watching. After that, we grabbed coffee and breakfast in Lovina, then hit the road toward Bedugul. Checked into our villa and rested up after two very early starts in a row — much needed.
Our Bali road trip took a thoughtful turn on Day 5, starting in the quiet coastal town of Lovina—famous for its early-morning dolphin tours. We woke before sunrise, full of excitement for the experience. However, once on the water, the reality felt less magical. Dozens of boats zigzagged around small pods of dolphins, turning what we hoped would be a serene wildlife encounter into something that felt more like a chase than respectful observation.
It was a moment that underscored the importance of ethical travel in Bali, especially for families. While seeing dolphins in the wild is an unforgettable experience, we’d recommend doing some research and seeking out responsible tour operators who put animal welfare first.
After the tour, we found a cozy café in town for coffee and breakfast—Lovina’s sleepy vibe and friendly locals offered a welcome reset. Then, we set off towards the scenic highlands of Bedugul, enjoying lush landscapes and winding mountain roads along the way.
By the afternoon, we checked into a peaceful villa surrounded by misty hills and cool breezes—a perfect spot to unplug and recharge. After two early starts in a row, a slower pace was just what we needed. The kids relaxed with board games, and we ended the day watching the sunset with warm ginger tea in hand.
Pro tip for fellow families: Balance is key. It's okay to skip some of the must-do activities if they don’t align with your values. Bali has a way of surprising you with memorable moments when you least expect them.
Day 5 reminded us that travel isn’t just about ticking off sights—it’s about connection, reflection, and creating lasting memories together.
