The Unexpected Street Encounter That Left Me Speechless in Jogja
I was absolutely not prepared for this 😂 Walking down Malioboro Street, minding my own business… then THIS guy appeared out of nowhere and scared me half to death. First thought: oh wow, that’s a person in a costume. Second thought: wait… why isn’t it moving? Third thought: why can’t my brain compute what’s happening right now?? It was all too much. Jogja keeps you on your toes 😅
Planning a family vacation to Bali? Don’t forget to add a quick side trip to Yogyakarta (Jogja)—especially if your crew loves a little adventure with their travel stories. One evening stroll on Malioboro Street and I ended up with a memory none of us will ever forget.
We were soaking up the vibrant atmosphere—street food sizzling on grills, locals and tourists buzzing around, and artists performing on every corner. Then it happened.
I spotted what looked like a life-size statue in the middle of the sidewalk. You know, one of those street performers dressed to the nines, barely breathing. I stepped closer, casually mentioning to my family, “Oh look, a statue guy!”
Next thing I know, this so-called 'statue' lunges forward with a dramatic pose! I jumped a solid meter back. My kids? In absolute hysterics. My pride? Left behind on the pavement.
Turns out, it's a common Jogja experience—performers wearing incredibly detailed costumes, standing perfectly still until some unsuspecting tourist (me 🙋♀️) gets too close. It's harmless fun, totally Instagram-worthy, and something we still laugh about over dinner.
Pro Tip: Malioboro is best explored in the evening when everything comes alive. Kids will love the street performers, colorful market stalls, and endless snack options (try the gudeg—a sweet young jackfruit stew unique to Jogja!).
Whether you’re carving out a few days from your Bali family adventure or planning a bigger Southeast Asia itinerary, don’t skip Jogja. Who knew a simple walk down the street could be this unforgettable?
