Is Yogyakarta Worth Visiting from Bali? Our Honest 5-Day Itinerary Breakdown

Is Yogyakarta worth visiting from Bali and how many days do you need? We’ve had so many messages asking this, so here’s our honest take. We spent 5 days in Yogyakarta, but with Day 1 travelling there and Day 5 travelling home, it gave us 3 full days to explore: Day 2: Prambanan & Borobudur temples (a huge day, lots of walking!) Day 3: Malioboro Street, cafés, exploring the city + a rest/recovery day Day 4: Taman Sari Water Palace & the Kraton (royal palace) Today is Day 5 — travel day back to Bali, and it just happens to be New Year’s Eve 🎆 Yogyakarta was incredible, rich in culture, history, and everyday life absolutely worth visiting. We’re happy to be home, recharged, and ready to kick off 2026 with a bang. If you’re planning Indonesia beyond Bali, Yogyakarta deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Yogyakarta is 100% worth the trip — especially if you're craving rich culture, ancient history, and a deeper look into everyday life in Java. We recently took a 5-day trip from Bali to Yogyakarta and here’s how it broke down: 🛫 **Day 1:** Travel day from Bali to Yogyakarta — flights are short and frequent, but give yourself time to settle in. 🏯 **Day 2:** We hit the ground running with a full-day temple tour. **Prambanan** and **Borobudur** are absolutely jaw-dropping. Be prepared for lots of walking, but the sights are more than worth it (tip: go early to beat the heat and crowds). ☕ **Day 3:** Time to slow it down. We explored **Malioboro Street**, browsed local markets, swung by a few cozy cafés, and took the afternoon to relax. This was our chance to catch our breath and let the kids recharge. 👑 **Day 4:** A visit to **Taman Sari Water Palace** and the **Kraton (royal palace)** gave us a wonderful glimpse into Javanese royal history and architecture. Both are great for families and very photo-worthy. 🛬 **Day 5:** Travel day back to Bali — and just in time for New Year’s Eve! 🎇 Yogyakarta added a beautiful layer of meaning and discovery to our Indonesian trip. It’s perfect for families looking to balance Bali’s beaches with enriching cultural experiences. If you’re planning a trip to Bali, we highly recommend carving out 3 days (plus your travel days) for Yogyakarta. It’s not just a side trip — it’s a highlight.
