Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of experiencing these rituals firsthand, learning a lot about how the Balinese approach death and the afterlife. Cremation ceremonies in Bali are colorful, vibrant, and filled with meaning. For the Balinese, death is not something to fear but part of the cycle of life. It’s about helping the soul transition, finding peace, and ultimately, being reborn. These ceremonies often involve grand processions, music, and offerings, with the whole community coming together to honour the deceased. The first cremation ceremony we attended left a lasting impression. It wasn’t just a goodbye, but a celebration of life. The gamelan music, the beautiful offerings, and the sense of connection with the community were overwhelming.
